Why Is My HTV Peeling? 8 Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Few things are more frustrating than a design that peels off after a wash or two. The good news: HTV peeling almost always comes down to a handful of fixable mistakes. Here are the 8 most common culprits — and how to get a permanent bond every time.

1. Not enough pressure

This is the #1 cause of peeling. HTV needs firm, even pressure to bond. A household iron rarely delivers enough — a heat press is far more reliable.

2. Temperature too low

If the plate isn't hot enough, the adhesive never fully activates. Check your vinyl's recommended temperature in our HTV heat settings guide.

3. Not pressing long enough

Rushing the press is a common mistake. Most HTV needs 10–15 seconds; specialty finishes may need more.

4. Skipping the pre-press

Always pre-press your blank for 2–3 seconds first. This removes moisture and wrinkles that stop the vinyl from adhering.

5. Peeling the carrier the wrong way

Peeling a "cold peel" vinyl while it's still hot (or vice versa) can lift the design. Follow the carrier's warm or cold peel instruction.

6. Pressing on the wrong fabric

Some fabrics (like waterproof nylon or certain performance blends) resist standard HTV. Match your vinyl to your fabric.

7. Washing too soon or too harshly

Wait 24 hours before the first wash, turn garments inside out, wash cold, and skip the fabric softener and high-heat dryer.

8. Low-quality or old vinyl

Cheap or expired vinyl loses adhesive strength. Start with quality HTV — browse our full range or grab a Mystery Pack to test different types.

The quick-fix checklist

If your HTV is lifting: increase pressure, confirm the temperature, add a few seconds, pre-press the blank, and press again after peeling with a cover sheet. Nail those, and your designs will last for years.
